Research: Underwater Communication in Real-time MIMO-SONAR-Systems
Underwater acoustic communication is a broad topic. Due to the fact, that wireless radio channels, like the ones used for data transmission outside the water, have significant damping problems in the water, lower frequencies are used in underwater communication. Lower frequencies and lower bandwithes lead to low datarates, although many underwater applications require high-bandwidth communication. The market demands new solutions for underwater communication, but up to now there are no capable solutions and the development in the underwater domain could not keep up with the tremendous progress of high datarate wireless communication standards outside the water, such as WiFi (IEEE 802.11 a/g/n/ac) or fourth generation (4G) cellular systems.
An interesting topic with a high demand for communication are distributed MIMO-SONAR-Systems. All members of the SONAR network should work together instead of interfering with each other. In order to coordinate their sending and receiving a huge amount of information has to be exchanged. Apart from sending and receiving, also the processing results from each member of the network should be provided.
