Research: Hydroacoustic measurement with towed arrays

A towed antenna is an antenna system that is pulled behind a vessel. Typically, it ranges from approximately one hundred meters to about one kilometer. Increased speeds elevate the ship's source level, potentially disrupting underwater sound measurements, depending on the frequency range being analyzed. Other sources of interference include ambient noise from factors like weather and self-noise from antenna components. The most challenging interference is flow-induced noise, stemming from turbulent flow around the towed sensor system.

The goal is to design a towed antenna using new sensor approaches like thin-film sensors and optical measurement technologies, along with implementing appropriate signal processing techniques to reduce flow-induced noise.
