Underwater Speech Examples
The following speech samples are recorded under water with microphones that were connected to swim googles. Here the idea was to used speech command such as "play", "stop", or "next/previos song" to control an MP3 player that is tipically weared on the backside of the head (kept to the head via the swim googles). The music signals are played either via waterproof headphones or bone-conduction loudspeakers (used in our case). Even a simple recognition scheme performed rather good for such "unusual" sounds. The protection of maritime infrastructure such as harbours, submarine cables, offshore wind farms, and pipelines has become much more relevant since the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine. Events such as the underwater detonation of the Nord Stream pipelines at the end of September 2022 show how vulnerable our infrastructure is and what impact acts of sabotage can have.
