Research: Automatic Quantification of Symptoms in Parkinson’s Disease

Balance and gait deficits are frequently seen in older adults and can lead to high personal and health care burdens. This PhD project is part of the EU funded Keep Control project which is about specific diagnosis and treatment of age-related gait and balance deficits (www.keep-control.eu; scientific coordinator and local supervisor: Prof. Walter Maetzler, Neurology Department of the University Hospital Schleswig-Holstein, Campus Kiel). The specific aim of this PhD project is the early diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. This will be done by detecting one of the cardinal symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, bradykinesia. Bradykinesia means slowness of movement. Detecting bradykinesia in its earliest stages could improve the course of the disease.

The goal of this project is to quantify bradykinesia in Parkinson’s patients. This will be done by analysing data from a few inertial measurement units that will be worn by the patients during clinical assessments and unsupervised home assessments. The inertial measurement units measure acceleration and angular velocity. This data will be used to detect common daily movements. The data during these movements will then be used to estimate the severity of bradykinesia.
