Research: Magnetic-acoustic Real-time MIMO SONAR Systems based on Thin-film Sensor Technology
The recent past has shown how vulnerable maritime infrastructure is to attacks. While there are already established methods of surveillance above water, the options for defending against attacks underwater are currently rather limited. Using SONAR technology it is possible to identify targets underwater. However, existing systems are currently limited in their application because, on the one hand, they are designed so that they can only be operated under certain conditions and, on the other hand, the sensors used are extremely cost-intensive.
Piezoelectric thin-film sensors represent an attractive alternative to conventional sensors due to their smaller dimensions and cost-effective production. These allow the use of corresponding sensors to be increased and new approaches to be pursued in the design of SONAR systems.
The aim is therefore to improve existing systems through the use of new sensors and the implementation of multistatic MIMO SONAR systems. Multistatics refers to the spatial separation of the transmitter and receiver structures. In a MIMO system, the transmission signals are also designed in such a way that spatial directivity is achieved on the transmission and reception sides.
