Research: Real-time Signal Processing for Magnetoelectric Sensors

Magnetoelectric (ME) sensors, developed in collarborative research groups at Kiel University (currently CRC 1261), are of high interest for medical applications, as their low cost, room temperature operation and small form factor have the potential to challenge other types of sensing devices. However, custom signal processing steps are necessary to adequately read out the measured magnetic fields and adaptive signal enhancement steps are investigated to achieve better results. These steps should also be deployed during measurements to provide an ongoing calibration.

A network of fixed actuators, such as coils, makes it possible to determine the position and orientation of a sensor or 3D sensor array in a volume of interest by magnetic and therefore wireless localization. When integrated into medical investigation probes like ultrasound devices or endoscopes, this enables their accurate tracking during examinations by a physician without a manual component. In turn, this facilitates the overall process for medical doctors and can thus improve overall patient care.

In addition to the magnetic localization, the data from the medical imaging devices can be used to enhance the localization estimate as well. With image processing algorithms, the information can be fused with that gathered by the sensors and potentially holds the potential for threedimensional reconstruction of the volume under investigation.
