The ANIR Corpus - Loudspeakers

The loudspeakers in this corpus can be divided into three groups with respect to usage and integration in the vehicles. Loudspeakers built into the vehicle by the manufacturer are referred to as standard car loudspeakers. The other types of loudspeakers are the ones added in a system retrofit and the mouth loudspeakers of head and torso simulators (HATS), which meet the criteria defined in ITU-T Rec. P.58.

To give a rough location of a loudspeaker, the zone convention from ITU-T Rec. P.1150 is used. According to this convention, each seat in the vehicle is assigned a zone number, starting with the driver's seat as zone one. Zone numbers are incremented by moving through a row from left to right before moving from the front of the vehicle to its back. A graphical overview of the zones in a vehicle is inlcuded in the vehicle-specific information below.

Vehicle-specific Information

The following will give a desription of the loudspeakers in each vehicle. For graphical overviews of the loudspeaker locations in the vehicles, please refer to the bottom of the page

To ensure that the measurements made are as reproducible as possible, there are standards that define the measurement setup and the implementation of the measurements. In this case it is recommendation P.1150 of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). According to ITU-T P.1150, a vehicle can be divided into different zones. The numbering of the zones begins on the driver's seat. All other seats are numbered from front to back and, depending on the driver's seat position, from left to right or from right to left. The example of the ITU recommendation contains a total of eight seats - but more seats are theoretically conceivable.

{tab-cars V Class (Daimler)}

Basics

The V Class is outfitted by the manufacturer with 4 standard car loudspeakers. In order to route custom third-party signals to the standard loudspeakers, an amplifier with DSP channels connects our soundcard outputs with the standard loudspeakers. Each outer seat is, additionally, equipped with a pair of speakers, one mounted to the left and the other mounted to the right of the seat's headrest. These headrest speakers have a custom 3d-printed housing, which also contains an amplifier. As 6 seats/zones are equipped withe these loudspeakers, there are a total of 12 headrest loudspeakers in the V Class. On all seats equipped with headrest speakers a HATS was placed to simulate human speakers. Taking these HATS mouth loudspeakers into account, there are an additional 6 loudspeakers in the V Class, bringing the total up to 22.

Zones

The above illustration shows the zone definition within the V Class according to ITU-T Rec. P.1150. Please note that zones 4 and 7 do not have any loudspeakers allocated to them.

Headrest Loudspeakers

There are speakers mounted to the left and right of the headrests. The resulting positions can be seen in the figure above.

Mouth Loudspeakers

There are loudspeakers placed in the mouths of the HATS. The position of these loudspeakers is depicted above.

Standard Car Loudspeakers

The standard loudspeakers of a V class are located in the doors of the driver and co-driver as well as on the left and right sides in the last row.
